On Friday, June 5th, 2026, Tokushima University and MNUMS held a symposium at the conference room of the Chinggis Khaan Museum to commemorate the 20th anniversary of academic exchange of the two universities. As part of the anniversary celebrations, a delegation of 12 members led by President Kawamura Yasuhiko participated from Tokushima University. Representatives from both universities delivered presentations highlighting the achievements of the past two decades and future directions, and the event also provided an opportunity to reconnect with members of MAUTA, the alumni association of MNUMS graduates who studied at Tokushima University.
The symposium began with opening remarks by President Damdindorj Boldbaatar of MNUMS, followed by greetings from President Kawamura Yasuhiko and congratulatory remarks from H.E. Igawahara Masaru, Ambassador of Japan to Mongolia. Presentations were then delivered on the following topics:
● Research Initiative “J-PEAKS” Adopted at Tokushima University (President Kawamura Yasuhiko)
● The History and Future of Mongolia-Japan Hospital Projects (Dean Hashimoto Ichiro)
● Friendship and Academic Partnership between MNUMS and Tokushima University (Vice President Murasawa Fumie)
● History of Exchange with the School of Dentistry, MNUMS (Professor Iwasaki Tomonori)
● Histopathological Features of Hepatocellular Carcinoma in Mongolian Patients with Hepatitis B and D Virus Infection (Orgil Jargalsaikhan)
● Additional presentations by faculty and researchers from both institutions on collaborative research and future prospects
These presentations demonstrated the significant progress made in education, research, and medical cooperation through the long-standing partnership between the two universities.
Before the symposium, President Damdindorj of MNUMS received an Honorary Degree from Tokushima University in recognition of his exceptional leadership in advancing bilateral collaboration. His contributions include the development of the Mongolia–Japan Hospital through the JICA project which Tokushima University has continued to support, the establishment of the first Double Degree Program between the two universities, and substantial joint research on Hepatitis B and D viruses.
A commemorative gift exchange was then held to mark the 20th anniversary. President Kawamura presented President Damdindorj Boldbaatar with the oil painting “Together Dividing the Wind”, another oil painting titled “Serenity Hill”, which was created by Tokushima University students, and the university mascot “Tokupon.” President Damdindorj presented President Kawamura with a Mongolian textile artwork depicting scenes of daily life printed on cashmere fabric.
The event concluded with a group photo of all participants, reaffirming the commitment of both universities to further deepen their friendship and expand their academic collaboration. The 20th Anniversary Symposium ended on a warm and celebratory note.
