On January 10th, 2026, the 22nd Community Exchange Symposium for 2025 academic year, titled "Hospital Art Connects People and Communities" was held.
This symposium is held as part of Tokushima University's community contribution activities to address the challenges and needs of the local community, and this was the 22nd time it has been held. This year's symposium was held in a hybrid format, with both an in-person venue and online participation (only the first part was hybrid), and more than 30 people participated in both the first and second parts, including residents of the prefecture, medical professionals, welfare facility staff, and students.
In the first part of the symposium, "The Current State of Hospital Art," we shared a multifaceted overview of the current state of hospital art, focusing on the history and expansion of the Tokudai Hospital Art Labo (THAL). We reaffirmed the broad applicability of masking tape art, which can have various effects in medical, nursing care, and welfare settings, and discussed its potential for future development.
In the workshop "The Future of Hospital Art" in the second part of the symposium, themed "Evolving Masking Tape Art," participants experienced how to remake existing artwork into something completely different by utilizing the properties of masking tape, which can be reapplied. Participants peeled off the original mural depicting a whirlpool to create numerous "Tane (small pieces to create masking tape art)," and learned how to create layouts that extended beyond the wall surface.
This symposium provided a valuable opportunity to reflect on the results of THAL's hospital art activities using masking tape, together with those involved in the receiving facilities and the creators, and to explore possibilities for future developments.
