Medicinal Herb Garden of Tokushima University Opened to the Public

The Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences opened its Medicinal Herb Garden to the public for five days from October 6th to 10th. This year, the garden was opened to the public despite the summer weather continuing into October and the Japanese archipelago experiencing an unusually hot spell, but the garden was blessed with relatively comfortable temperatures and good weather during the event, and around 800 people visited from within and outside Tokushima Prefecture.

Within the approximately 10,000 square-meter garden, visitors enjoyed a variety of plants in their autumn attire, including herbs such as lemongrass and curry plant, medicinal plants such as euonymus and sickle plant, and endangered plants such as Artemisia gilvescens, which grows only in Tokushima and Okinawa, and Tribulus terrestris, which has sharp thorns that can puncture bicycle tires.

This year's public opening, titled "Enjoy Herbs," featured hands-on exhibits mainly related to herbs, and a tasting of herbal teas, where visitors could blend their own favorite herbs from around 20 different herbs, including lemongrass, rosemary, jasmine, stevia, and hibiscus, led by students from the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, which was well received.

The Medicinal Herb Garden holds public open days every year with a variety of themes. We will continue to hold these open days in the future, and will also strive to contribute to the development of pharmacy through the collection, cultivation, and research of medicinal plants, as well as through interactions with local residents and social contribution activities. We appreciate your understanding and support.
