Research Overview
● Social Challenge: Digital Divide and Staff Shortages in Depopulating, Aging Rural and Mountainous Regions
It is widely recognized that maintaining healthy oral function contributes to overall health. Therefore, it is essential to enhance the awareness of self-help “Ji-jo” and mutual aid “Go-jo” among the elderly living in mountainous and rural areas experiencing depopulation and aging. Furthermore, it is crucial to establish a system where support staff such as public health nurses and care managers provide monitoring, enable early detection of oral frailty among the elderly, and facilitate swift connection to social solidarity care “Kyo-jo” based on the sharing and coordination of relevant PHR information(Fig. 1).

● Technical Challenge: Reducing the Burden on Support Personnel
We developed ICT systems to reduce the excessive workload of support staff caused by staffing shortages and to enable the effective and efficient sharing of information across professions (Fig. 2).

1.    Information-sharing web application for community care conference (“Mimamoru-kun”)
2.    Oral and cognitive function assessment web game application
3.    Oral care assessment database system for caregivers

Going forward, we aim to integrate these systems and develop an application equipped with an AI oral recommendation engine that provides personalized information and suggestions to improve oral environments and awareness among individuals requiring support. By increasing the “execution rate” of information registration and behavioral change, we expect to promote the establishment of healthy lifestyle habits for disease prevention and pre-symptomatic care (Fig 3).

Potential Applications and Commercialization Prospects
● Use as an Information-Sharing Tool for Evacuation and Rescue During Disasters
During disasters, people who need support can quickly become people who need rescue. Therefore, this system is intended to serve as a tool for sharing critical information in preparation for disasters. In Naka Town, preparations are underway to use the system for disaster preparedness.

In collaboration with the Tokushima University Research Center for Environment and Disaster Prevention, we plan to prioritize collected information based on business continuity planning (BCP), which will further enhance the system’s functionality as a practical disaster prevention and response tool.
