Faculty of Biosience and Bioindustry

The Faculty of Bioscience and Bioindustry was established in April 2016 as the first new faculty at Tokushima University in about thirty years. It is Japan’s first faculty where students can study biotechnology-based health science, food science, and agriscience with the aim of using these skills in an inter-disciplinary manner.

From the second year, students in the faculty are assigned to one of the Bioengineering Course, Food Science Course, and Agroscience Course, obtaining specialist knowledge in the development of biopharmaceuticals and functional foods, selective breeding of crops and livestock, plant factories and so on, as well as the business knowledge required to establish new industries. In this way, we aim to develop people who can contribute to the development of the local economy through the creation of innovative industries using biological resources, discovering new market needs in the fields of pharmaceuticals, food, agriculture, forestry and fisheries. This can be viewed as a sixth-sector industry integrating everything from agricultural produce as the primary industry through secondary industry of processed products, to tertiary industry comprising sales and services.
