About this department

Department of Applied Chemistry consists of three education and research fields, namely the synthetic and polymer science, the physico-chemical materials science, and the chemical process engineering.  We intend to further advance our expertise on materials synthesis, materials functionality and chemical process engineering, and integrate it with other scientific fields to broaden our perspective.  We thereby aim to produce highly knowledgeable professionals who can contribute to creating novel methodologies in various fields of chemistry and beyond.

Unique

Students will take Graduate Research on Applied Chemistry and Graduate Seminar on Applied Chemistry courses and deepen their understanding of cutting-edge chemistry through their own thesis research.  In addition, they will take advanced courses to learn about the research fields of this Department.  Furthermore, they will take Interdisciplinary Seminar in Science and Technology, which is offered by other Departments, and Science and Technology Communication, to attain a wide range of perspective beyond chemistry. 

Introduction

Synthetic and Polymer Chemistry

This group provides education and research on the creation of high value-added substances and highly functional materials through the application of basic chemistry and its methods, including the synthesis of organic and polymeric compounds, separation analysis, and clarification of reaction mechanisms. We have research groups in synthetic organic chemistry and polymer chemistry, and pursue the dream of creating new materials and substances that are useful in our daily lives. It is no exaggeration to say that the 21st century is truly an age of atoms and molecules, and the dream of "molecular design," which is the goal of this group, will expand endlessly.

Physico-chemical and Materials Sciences

We develop pioneering methods for analyzing substances at atomic to molecular levels, which will be applied to the creation of novel functions.  This research group focuses on analytical chemistry for biological and environmental substances, solid state chemistry under ultrahigh pressure, physical chemistry of crystal growth and supercritical fluids, and electrochemistry for developing biosensors. 

Chemical Process Engineering

In modern society, it is required to create materials and reactions that satisfy "breakthrough new functions" and "environmental care" simultaneously and apply them to on-site production processes.  To achieve these goals, research topics including functional inorganic materials science, adsorption science,  separation engineering, catalyst science and resource recycling are being implemented in the Chemical Process Engineering group.
