About this department

Mechanical science and engineering covers a broad range of design, manufacturing, testing processes of various machines: automobiles, ships, airplanes, space rockets, miscellaneous heavy machinery, industrial machinery, engines, robots, computers, cameras, micro-machines, cell phones, and so on.  It also covers both basic science and technology , such as materials science, measurement technology, manufacturing process in steel, petrochemical, and pharmaceutical industries.  Furthermore, we train engineers who have the ability to explore and solve problems by integrating mechanical engineering and other fields from a broad perspective.

Unique

This course divided into four fields of mechanical Engineering; Material Science, Energy Systems, Intelligent Mechanics, and Production Engineering, providing systematic education from basic to applied studies. Students study the basics of mechanical engineering as part of an educational program that enables engineers to realize their ambitions through practical work. The lectures, training and experiments are led by academic staff with full support from veteran staff and graduate students. Important subjects are taught in small groups by a number of faculty staff. Finally, students acquire the basic knowledge in mechanical engineers through their one-year graduation research necessary  to work for global society.

Introduction

Meterial System

Materials Science deals with a variety of mechanical materials that dominate the performance of machines. We investigate nano-, micro-, and macroscopic mechanical properties of materials by the combination of theoretical approaches which involves the computer simulations and experiments heading for the development of new functional materials as well as the improvement of steel, non-steel, ceramic and combined materials.

Energy System

This field is concerned with mechanical systems that utilize energy.
Researchers in this field are involved in improving the efficiency of turbomachinery such as turbines and pumps to save energy, controlling and elucidating complex flows in industrial processes, improving engine performance and developing key technologies, waste heat recovery and thermal energy conversion technologies to save energy, developing battery materials, and understanding the interaction between biological systems and mechanical environments.

Intelligent Mechanics

This division deals with the Control and measurement of machine dynamics, and machine intelligence. We investigate imaging and optics technology for measurement, human-friendly control technology with soft actuator, livelihood support technology, clarification of osteoblastic function , motion and vibration control using system dynamics, maneuvering assistance technology for UAV.

Production Engineering

This division covers the variety of production engineering and its related areas. We investigate optical metrology and instrumentation,  evaluation on the residual stress in crystal bulk materials by using X-ray diffraction, development of machining methods of unmachinable-shaped holes, research on processing technology to the difficult-to-cut materials, surface modification techniques and functional materials.
