A group from the Tokushima University Faculty of Medicine visit the Mongolian National University of Medical Sciences

2016-9-13

From August 24 to 28, a group of nine staff and five students from the Tokushima University Faculty of Medicine visited the Mongolian National University of Medical Sciences, led by Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Minoru Irahara. An interdepartmental exchange agreement was signed in 2005 between the Faculty of Medicine and Mongolia National Medical University, and student exchanges started in 2006, with exchange visits, summer seminars, homestays and so on. Active exchanges have continued for the last ten years.

The capital Ulaanbaatar has seen dramatic development. Since the last visit in 2014, the city has undergone a significant transformation with the completion of Chinggis Khaan International Airport and road systems. The Mongolian National University of Medical Sciences has developed in step, and today, a new medical faculty and teaching hospital are being built on a large campus in the outskirts of Ulaanbaatar. A new seven-story library has also been built on the campus, holding around 70,000 medical books in Mongolian, Russian and English.

The delegation visited each facility. An agreement was reached to cooperate closely with the Mongolian National University of Medical Sciences which is enjoying rapid development, and to cooperate in developing personnel for the newly built teaching hospital and medical school.

They also renewed old friendships with members of the MAUTA alumni association who graduated from Tokushima University. These graduates are working at the Mongolian National University of Medical Sciences and in general hospitals in the city, representing a link with Tokushima. Exchanges involving these graduates are expected to intensify in future. Meanwhile, the five students from Tokushima’s Faculty of Medicine stayed at the homes of host students, experiencing Mongolian home life. The students also held a joint symposium at the university. They gave a presentation about Tokushima and Tokushima University, and all the students enjoyed a friendly cultural exchange with Awa Odori and Mongolian folk dances.

Last year marked the tenth anniversary of exchanges, and this year, another ten years began. The visit raised expectations for further exciting advances in exchanges in the next ten years.
